John R. Sutton, Sr. Biography
John R. Sutton, Sr. has been licensed to practice law since 1971. Recently retired from the practice of law, John remains “of counsel” as the honored founder of The Sutton Firm, P.A. John thrived in areas of domestic and family law, criminal law and civil litigation. John maintains accredited hours and remains licensed to practice law in the State of North Carolina, United States Federal Court, Western District, and 4th Circuit Court of Appeals.
John graduated cum laude from George Washington School of Law in May of 1971 and from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in May of 1966 with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Relations.
Born in Front Royal, Virginia as the 5th child of George and Edith Sutton, John attended Front Royal Elementary school until his family re-located to Asheville, North Carolina in 1954. John graduated from Lee Edward’s High School in 1961.
After law school, John worked for the U.S. Treasury until the summer of 1972 when his brother, George Sutton invited John to return to Western North Carolina to join the law firm of Sutton & Patton in Canton, North Carolina. Soon thereafter John and Roy became partners until the summer of 1975. After George’s untimely and unfortunate death in 1975, John embarked into solo private practice under the name of The Law Offices of John R. Sutton until 1979 when Attorney James M. Edmonds partnered and formed Sutton and Edmonds, Attorneys at Law. John and Jim practiced law together in Candler, North Carolina as Sutton and Edmonds until 2000 when John’s son, John R. Sutton, Jr., and daughter in law, April Burt Sutton, joined the firm as associates. In 2002, John Sutton Jr. joined the partnership and Sutton, Edmonds and Sutton was formed. In May 2004, father and son at last launched The Sutton Firm, P.A. when John’s daughter, Emily Sutton Dezio joined the practice of law. The Sutton Firm, P.A. is truly a family practice wherein all practicing attorneys are related by blood or marriage.
John married Elaine Phillips Sutton of Henderson, North Carolina in 1968 and have three children: Nan Sutton Howard of Charlotte North Carolina, John R. Sutton, Jr. of Candler, North Carolina and Emily Sutton Dezio of Candler, North Carolina John and Elaine are the proud grandparents of Sam, Sara & Sutton Howard and Lilyan & Abigail Sutton and Vinetta Dezio.
John R. Sutton, Sr. is retired, ornery and slightly hostile... but has a wonderful time enjoying his grandchildren (for whom he spoils), horses (for whom do not talk back) and garden (for which produces enough green beans and tomatos to feed WNC) .

John R. Sutton, Jr. has been licensed to practice law since September 2000. John applies his knowledge in the specialized areas of criminal defense, construction litigation, personal injury, medical malpractice and civil litigation. John is licensed to practice law in the State of North Carolina, The Cherokee Supreme Court of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, United States Federal Court, Western District, 4th Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.
John is a member of the American Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar Association and the Academy of Trial Lawyers.
John graduated with Honors from St. Thomas School of Law in May 2000. John graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in May of 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communications.
Born and raised in Candler, North Carolina, John attended Enka High School and graduated in May 1992. John is married to April Burt Sutton of Margate, Florida. John and April have two children, Lilyan & Abigail.
Emily Sutton Dezio Biography

Emily Sutton Dezio has been licensed to practice law since March 2003. Emily applies her knowledge in the specialized areas of divorce, child custody, child support, alimony, post separation support, equitable distribution and other family related legal issues. Emily enjoys appellate practice as well. Emily is licensed to practice law in North Carolina and the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. Emily is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association and American Bar Association.
Prior to entering private practice, Emily clerked for North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr for two years. During her clerkship she studied and worked on hundreds of appellate decisions crafting her legal skills guided by the leadership of North Carolina’s highest Court.
Emily graduated from Vermont Law School in May 2002 and from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Art’s degree in May 1998. Born and raised in Candler, North Carolina, Emily attended Enka High School and graduated in May 1994. Emily and her husband Tony Dezio of Wilmington, North Carolina have a beautiful daughter, Etta Dezio. Emily volunteers her time and service to the Enka Park Commission and Mountain Area Volunteer Lawyers Association.
